FIRST LEGO League (FTC) Squads
Age Group: Grades 7-12 (Typically ages 12-18)
Through immersive STEM experiences, students engage in designing, building, and programming robots using metal components, sensors, and sophisticated control systems to compete in an annual robotics challenge. FTC fosters critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and Gracious Professionalism® as teams come together to tackle real-world engineering challenges.
What FTC Involves:
- Annual Game Challenge: Each year features a new themed game, which tests robot agility, strategy, and performance.
- Innovation and Outreach: In addition to building robots, teams document their work in engineering notebooks, do community STEM outreach, and may design innovative solutions beyond robotics.
- Robot Design and Engineering: Teams design, build, and program robots using a reusable kit of metal and plastic parts. Robots are powered by Android-based control systems and programmed using Java or Blocks (a visual programming language).
Mentorship within FLL
Our FLL squads benefit immensely from the guidance of experienced high school members from our VRC or older FLL teams. They help with:
- Brainstorming robot designs and programming logic.
- Practicing presentations for the Innovation Project.
- Understanding game strategy and mission planning.
- Reinforcing Core Values and teamwork.
Why Join an FTC Squad?
- Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Learn programming and engineering concepts in a fun way.
- Enhance research, presentation, and communication abilities.
